EAT RIGHT TO STAY HEALTHY

From Dr.Wiancek's book "The Natural Healing Companion":

The way to stay healthy is to keep your immune system strong and proper nutrition is the number one way to keep it in good working order. Food is the best medicine of all, provided you eat the right balance of nutrients, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Study after study links dietary deficiency to disease.
What constitutes a healthy diet? Specific requirements vary from one person to another, but the following general guidelines will get you off to a good start.
Eat at least five servings of fruits and five servings of vegetables a day, the best way to do this is to eat a salad with five different vegetables in it—the more colorful the salad, the greater the variety of nutrients you are getting. For fruits, eat a fruit salad or several fruit snacks during the day, or sprinkle a variety of fruits on your morning cereal
Eating fruits and vegetables increases the amount of fiber in your diet and helps you get your required daily quota of vitamins and minerals. The benefits include a reduced risk of disease, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and help in losing weight. More than 200 studies have shown that eating fruits and vegetables helps protect you from various forms of cancer. Other studies indicate similar protection against cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, diverticulosis, and cataracts.
One piece of fruit or 1/2 cup of a vegetable constitutes a single serving. Because cooking destroys valuable nutrients, try to eat fruits and vegetables raw, or steam vegetables lightly before eating. Precooked, frozen, and canned fruits and vegetables are lower in nutrients and higher in sodium, sugar, and preservatives.
Eat five servings of whole grains a day, Avoid white bread, white rice, and ocher heavily processed grains. Even if they are "enriched" or "fortified, they are still lacking essential nutrients. Instead, look for foods made from 100 percent whole grains, without added refined sugars (check the ingredients list on labels. A "whole grain" consists of 1) the bran, which contains fiber, B vitamins, fats, minerals, and protein; 2) the germ, a source of protein, fats, and vitamins A, Bs and E; and 3) the endosperm, which contains complex carbohydrates. Most of the vitamins and minerals in grains are found in their outer layers (the bran and germ) and processing removes both the layers and the nutrients.
A slice of bread or a cup of cooked grain or pasta constitutes one serving. Eat more complex carbohydrates. In the same vein, you should increase your intake of complex carbohydrates and reduce your intake of simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are found in unprocessed, unrefined vegetables; in dried beans and peas; in whole wheat products; and in grains including rye, barley, quinoa, millet, brown rice, buckwheat, corn, kamut, and oats. (Remember that white breads, white rice, and many pastas and breakfast cereals have been stripped of most of their complex carbohydrates during processing).
Simple carbohydrates are mainly in sugars: white and brown sugar, corn syrup, soft drinks, candy, dried fruit, jellies and jams, canned or frozen fruits, ice cream, and pudding. Simple carbohydrates contribute nothing to your diet except calories, and they can upset the way in which the body metabolizes sugar, leading to high blood sugar and adult-onset diabetes. Instead, use unrefined sweeteners such as 100 percent natural maple syrup, honey, and fruit juices. Avoid artificial sweeteners, as research shows they can aggravate diabetes and may cause cancer.
Eat at Least 25 grams of fiber daily. Dietary fiber comes from plant cell walls, which our bodies cannot digest, there are two types: insoluble (wheat bran is one example) and soluble, which can be found in oat bran, apples, cherries, and dandelion root, among other foods. A combination of both is recommended to help prevent breast cancer and intestinal diseases such as appendicitis, diverticulosis, and colon cancer.
Eat fish, but curb your intake of other animal products. Red meat, including beef and pork, is associated with increased risk of heart attacks, several forms of cancer, prostate disease, high blood pressure, and a host of other diseases. No more than one serving of red meat per week is recommended.
Chicken and turkey are better for you than red meat, but studies show that ocean fish are far preferable and offer protection against heart disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, high blood pressure, inflammatory conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, and other diseases. Salmon, mackerel, cod, albacore tuna, halibut, anchovies, and herring are particularly good for you. In general, ocean-caught fish are more healthful than farm-raised fish.

Why do a spring detox?

As the warmer months of spring and summer approach us, now is a fantastic time to revitalize your health. Similar to the maintenance your car requires, if you want it to run well for years to come, your body operates more efficiently with regular tune-ups. Participating in a detox program once or twice every year gives your body a real boost, setting up a better foundation to ensure a long and healthy life.

Why detox? Well, today it’s virtually impossible to avoid the constant toxic exposures in our modern world. Pesticides in our food, heavy metals in our water, exhaust fumes in our air, chemicals in our skin and personal care products, hazardous materials in our cleaning products; the list goes on. Stress, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and the use of alcohol and drugs (both pharmaceutical and recreational) also contribute to toxic overload in the body. Toxicity can lead to development of any number and type of symptoms, such as fatigue, anxiety, depression, weight gain, joint pain, allergies, memory loss, brain fog, digestive problems, skin rashes, and recurrent infections. The good news is there are effective tools that can be applied to dramatically lower our total toxic burden, thus giving us the ability to not only alleviate symptoms but also remove factors that frequently contribute to chronic disease.

A healthy diet and lifestyle paired with periodic cleansing is an excellent way to feel your best. A good general cleanse involves reducing new exposures to toxins, eating a nutrient-dense cleansing diet, using specific herbs and supplements to support organs like the liver, colon, and kidneys, sweating and moving the body regularly, and working on any emotional or spiritual issues that may be of importance for you. When detoxing you should eliminate sugars (fruit is OK, limited), alcohol, white flour and caffeine. 5-12 servings of organic vegetables should be eaten daily and if you are eating meat limit it to organic or wild caught meat only. There are dozens of recipes on the blog to aide you with your detox! When the body is given the opportunity to “take out the trash,” so to speak, it can then devote valuable energy and resources to other important functions like repairing damaged tissues and strengthening the immune system.  As total toxic burden decreases, symptoms will tend to diminish. People frequently report reductions in pain and inflammation, desired weight loss, and feelings of rejuvenation and vitality.

If you’re interested in feeling your best, maybe it’s time for a gentle detox. But please be careful when considering programs or products to purchase. Many types of so-called “detox” programs and products available on the market can actually do more harm than good, not to mention waste valuable time and money!  For example, it’s best to stay away from programs that promote significant calorie restriction since these can lead to dangerous swings in blood sugar. Also, you’ll want to avoid products that simply act as laxatives since overuse of these can cause dependence and/or electrolyte imbalances. Colon cleansing is a vitally important aspect of any successful detox, but don’t be fooled into thinking laxatives are the answer! When it comes to safe and effective detoxification, each and every one of the organs involved in detox should be specifically supported-the liver, colon, kidneys, skin, lungs, and lymphatics. Here at Riverwalk Natural Health Clinic we carry high grade, organic, professional strength greens; one that really like is "Renewal Greens." It is very important that the green blend you choose is all organic, if not you are loading yourself up with toxins- the exact opposite of what the goal of a detox is. Also keep in mind that undertaking a detox program is not appropriate for everyone, and in some cases may be contraindicated. Detox is intended for people who are generally in good health.

Some common ways our exposure to toxins is increased:
•    Eating a diet high in processed foods and fat
•    Drinking tap water
•    Excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages
•    Excessive alcohol consumption
•    Tobacco use
•    Recreational drug use
•    Chronic use of medication
•    Lack of strenuous exercise
•    Liver dysfunction
•    Kidney problems
•    Intestinal dysfunction
•    Occupational exposure
•    Using pesticides, herbicides, paint, and other toxic substances without adequate protective gear
•    Living or working near areas of high vehicle traffic or industrial plants

Top 9 Water Sources

This morning's blog was about the current research on hydrotherapy, and the benefits of regularly soaking in mineral water.  Below are 9 of the most formidable sources for soaking.

Bad Sulza, Germany
Toskana Therme is known for its natural, warm salt water that springs from an ancient underground ocean, allowing guests to float as if in the Dead Sea.

Ojo Caliente, N.M.
Revered by Pueblo Indians for over 3,000 years, the springs at Ojo Caliente are heated by subterranean volcanic aquifers and fill 11 pools with 80- to 109-degree waters with different combinations of minerals.  One of the pools contains a high arsenic content.  Arsenic is said to relieve arthritis.

Hot Springs, Va.
The Omni Homestead touted as the “oldest spa structure in the U.S,” contains waters that remain a consistent 98 degrees, even in winter.   This spa is where Thomas Jefferson soaked to relieve his rheumatism.

Saturnia, Italy
Here at the Terme di Saturnia Spa and Golf Resort, the water pours into a large mineral pool fast enough (132 gallons a second) that it is refreshed every four hours.  The spa has been favored by discerning travelers as well as cutting-edge beauty clinics of Switzerland, such as La Prairie. The mineral water is known for having a lot of sulfur which is a building block for collagen and makes skin feel soft and smooth.

Baden-Baden, Germany
Baden means “bath” in Germany, and the old joke is the town is so charming, special and lovely, they named it twice. Situated in the foothills of the idyllic Black Forest, it is one of Europe’s classic spa towns where Roman emperors once came to ease their aches.
The Caracalla Spa is famous for its glass walls.  The mineral waters come in both hot and cold (alternating temperatures are believed to stimulate circulation and build the immune system). The second floor is for those who prefer to go au natural, a common practice for Germans.

Brittany, France
The Thalasso Center was built by three-time Tour de France winner Louison Bobet after thalassotherapy helped him recover from several surgeries following a car accident. Everything about the property embraces the ocean.

Montauk, N.Y.
The closest the U.S. has to a thalasso center is in Montauk on the tip of Long Island. Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, pumps ocean water into its heated indoor Olympic-size pool.

Healing Waters

"The word spa is believed to be an acronym of the Latin phrase ‘salus per aqua’- health through water."

The belief in water’s ability to heal goes back to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks who knew the value of a warm bath to sooth aches and pains.  As the population ages, we are increasingly seeking healing waters.
The Romans are credited with the world’s first spas- elaborate bath houses built near mineral springs.  The word spa is believed to be an acronym of the Latin phrase ‘salus per aqua’- health through water. Doctors in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries prescribed drinking and bathing at well-known hot springs and seaside towns, such as Brighton, England and Baden-Baden, Germany.

Resorts became fashionable hang outs for monarchs and artists of the day — some for the social scene and others hoping to relieve ailments including infertility, rheumatism and gout.  Seawater therapy was termed “thalassotherapy” (thalassa means sea in Greek) by a French doctor in 1865. Patients were prescribed a strict regimen of ocean water, sea air, algae wraps, walks on the beach, massage and healthy meals.

In the U.S., many thermal springs were held sacred by Native Americans and later frequented by nobility, celebrities and presidents. Franklin Roosevelt enjoyed many a good soak in mineral waters throughout the country to relieve symptoms from his polio. Proponents of the “water cure” believed that it replenished our bodies as we absorbed needed minerals through our pores.

A growing body of evidence shows that our ancestors may have been right. A study done in Israel in 2008 indicated that soaking regularly in mineral water can relieve pain and improve motor function in elderly adults suffering from chronic lower back pain and arthritis. Another study from the Italian Board of Medicine looked at data from over 23,000 spa goers and found a major reduction in hospitalizations, sick days and pharmacological drug use. It has been found that hydrotherapies help with common health complaints due to aging.  Others conclude that hydrotherapies help us relax more and worry less.

5 Foods for Natural Detoxification

Detoxifying foods offer many benefits to our overall health. Rich in antioxidants, these foods can reduce the ageing of cells within the body.

Due to our toxic environment cleansing can provide rejuvenation from common symptoms of toxic exposure we experience. Read here for more about common symptoms of toxicity.

1.      Leafy greens: namely spinach and kale are full of beneficial nutrients. Spinach is rich in Vitamin K, Iron, Vitamin E for skin health, and Vitamin C which supports a healthy immune system. Get more greens into your day not just in salads- try juicing, sautéing, or blend them in a smoothie.

2.      Beets: beets support liver health, one of the main organs included in the process of daily detoxification by the body. Beets are known for their fiber content which supports healthy waste elimination by the digestive system.

3.      Artichokes: artichokes contain high amounts of Magnesium which contributes to healthy sleep patterns, moods, and handling stress. Artichokes are also a diuretic due to their Potassium content.

4.      Fennel: fennel is a bulb vegetable that is high in fiber. Fiber provides a feeling of fullness when consumed. The leaves and seeds of this plant are often used in herbal teas as they support an ease of digestion.

5.      Tomatoes: tomatoes contain a beneficial pigment called Lycopene which is known for helping to reduce the risk of cancers such as prostate and stomach cancer. Tomatoes are also highly acidic which stimulates the secretion of digestive juices in the stomach.

What Does a Good Detoxification Program Include?

Fall and spring are the perfect times to do a detoxification program.

Fall and spring are the perfect times to do a detoxification program.  With the changing of the seasons it’s a great time to lose the extra few pounds before the holidays are here again where most people gain five pounds.

A good detoxification program will work on the main organs of detoxification which include the liver, gallbladder, digestive tract, kidneys, lungs, skin, blood and lymphatic system. The program should include a cleansing diet; herbal and supplement protocol to cleanse the liver, lungs, colon and skin; physical therapies such as hydrotherapy, sauna’s and baths; relaxation such as deep breathing and meditation; and mental, emotional and spiritual exploration like setting new goals and journaling.  Testing for heavy mentals, liver enzymes, food & environmental allergies and parasite testing.

Some Common Symptoms of Toxicity.

Spring is a Great Time to Detox!

Why detox? U.S. industries annually release billions of pounds of toxic chemicals into the environment.  Modern agriculture, too, is a major source: By conservative estimates, about two billion pounds of pesticides are used on our food crops each year! We live in an extremely toxic world that makes it impossible to completely avoid eating drinking and breathing without coming in contact with toxins from our environment.  Exposure takes place daily such as pesticides in our foods, heavy metals in our water, chemically laden cosmetics, body products and cleaning products, car exhaust, alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs and electromagnetic radiation from computers, cell phones, televisions and microwaves.

As a naturopathic physician I set up different detox programs for my clients depending on the toxic load.  I can check heavy metals thru the urine or hair, liver enzymes, food allergies and/or environmental allergies.  For more information give us a call at the Riverwalk Natural Health Clinic at 970-926-7606.
